The rest of the day is spent running from one crisis to the next, trying to handle all that happened yesterday during our “attitude injection.”

After only a little bit of time, a few hours or a few days, we feel our newly pumped up attitude slipping away. Like a little kid at the circus who forgets to hold on to the balloon her parents bought for her. A moment's distraction, and her balloon is lost -- drifting away, getting smaller and smaller against the sky.

That's why parents tie the balloon string to their children’s wrists.

When our attitude’s all pumped up and not tied to anything, it’s the same as the kid who loses the balloon. We feel it slipping away and there's nothing we can do. Just like the circus balloon, there's no way to get it back.

In Dale Carnegie, attitudes improve because SKILLS IMPROVE AND RESULTS IMPROVE. It's like tying the string around our wrist. Now our attitude is something WE control. In Dale Carnegie, attitudes DO change, and THE CHANGE IS LONG-LASTING because it’s tied to skills.
